About the Scholarships and AwardsThe Department of English offers eight scholarships, two awards, and a tuition and fee waiver for qualified English students. Applications for 2012-2013 were accepted March 1, 2012 - April 16, 2012.

The Nancy and Ralph Babcock Jr. Memorial Scholarship
Applicant must be an English major with a Creative Writing emphasis. In addition to the application form, students must provide a sample of their writing (a short story, creative work of non-fiction, group of five or more poems, or a non-fiction prose totaling no more than 15 pages) in typed manuscript.

Bonnie J. Barthold Award
This award honors the life and work of Bonnie J. Barthold, a former English professor who is an inspirational figure, particularly in the education of and about ethnic minorities and persons with disabilities. This award is open to ethnic minority students or students with a disability majoring or minoring in English whose academic accomplishment, service commitment, or professional goals will contribute to social justice or diversity. Together with the application form, applicants must submit no more than 15 pages of creative or scholarly work and a one-page statement reflecting how they meet the criteria for the award.

R.D. Brown Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship honors R.D. Brown, an accomplished writer and gifted English teacher who taught at Western for twenty-five years. It supports an outstanding junior or senior English major concentrating in creative or professional writing. In addition to the application form, students must provide a sample of their writing (a short story, creative work of non-fiction, group of five or more poems, or a non-fiction prose totaling no more than 15 pages).

Ethel Grady Church Scholarship
This scholarship honors Ethel Grady Church, a long-time resident of Bellingham and friend of the English Department. It supports an upper-division or graduate student majoring in English who has been at WWU at least three quarters. Recipients should exhibit high potential for making a contribution to society. In addition to the application form, students must provide a grade transcript and a brief statement explaining their future goals and career plans.

English Department Undergraduate Tuition and Fee Waiver
Applicant must be a full-time English major with a GPA in English courses of 3.5 or better. In addition to the application form, students must provide a transcript.

Leslie Hunt Memorial Poetry Award
This award honors the life and work of Professor Leslie Hunt, a graduate of Western and a long-time faculty member in the Department of English. This award is for the Western student who submits the most accomplished poem or group of poems. In addition to the application form, students must provide a sample of their poetry in typed manuscript. Previously published work is not acceptable.

The Nancy J. Johnson English Education Scholarship
This scholarship honors the very accomplished work of the English Department’s own Dr. Nancy J. Johnson, an inspirational figure with a global reputation in the field of English Education. Applicant must be an English Education major who has also been admitted into the Woodring College of Education. In addition to the application form and copy of a transcript, students must provide a brief explanation of their teaching plans (age/grade interest, when student teaching will take place, and an exploration of commitment to English/language arts in the elementary, middle, or high school).

William K. McNeill Creative Writing Memorial Scholarship
Applicant must be an English major with a Creative Writing emphasis, who is in good academic standing, demonstrates a high level of skill in English writing, exhibits leadership qualities and good character, and expresses financial need. In addition to the application form, applicants must submit a letter detailing the above as well as a writing sample.

William K. McNeill English Literature Memorial Scholarship
Applicant must be an English major with a Literature emphasis, who is in good academic standing, demonstrates a high level of skill in English writing, exhibits leadership qualities and good character, and expresses financial need. In addition to the application form, applicants must submit a letter detailing the above and a writing sample.

William Smith Scholarship in Professional and Technical Writing
This scholarship honors retired English Department faculty member William Smith, an accomplished scholar and award-winning teacher. This scholarship supports an English major with academic accomplishment in professional and technical writing. In addition to the application form, students should submit a grade transcript and a one-page statement explaining their academic goals.

Dr. Evelyn Steger Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship honors the vibrant memory of Dr. Evelyn Steger, a native of Bellingham, distinguished graduate of Western, and early Department faculty member in English Literature. Dr. Steger was an ardent feminist once described by The New York Times as “a force of nature.” This scholarship supports a full-time English major with a concentration in English Studies and a minor in Philosophy. Recipient should have a record of academic accomplishment. Together with the application form, applicants must submit a grade transcript and one-page statement explaining their academic goals.
